Here’s a look at the four-cylinder engine in the 2023 Land Rover Defender

The 2023 Land Rover Defender 90 and 110 come standard with a four-cylinder engine that deserves to be looked at.

An impressive level of power

Despite being the entry-level engine, the 2,0L turbocharged four-cylinder that powers the P300 versions of the Defender 90 and 110 is capable of delivering an output of 296 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This torque figure is impressive since it is close to the output generated by six-cylinder engines in competing vehicles. Also impressive is the fact that this maximum torque output is available between 1,500 and 4,500 RPM, which means that at any speed, the Defender always has access to a reserve of torque. This is helpful for making quick overtaking maneuvers because the transmission doesn’t need to downshift many gears to find some engine power.

Out on the road, this translates into a top speed of 191 kilometres per hour and an acceleration time of 7.1 seconds between 0 and 100 km/h, which gives the entry-level Defender a level of performance that is more often found in higher trim levels of competing vehicles.

Many technologies to help with efficiency

The 2.0L four-cylinder engine found in the 2023 Land Rover Defender is equipped with a number of technologies that make it more efficient than expected, such as the auto start/stop system that cuts off the engine when the vehicle speed reaches zero and the driver keeps holding the brake pedal, such as when stopped at a light or in heavy traffic. This makes it possible to save fuel by limiting the amount that is burned while the vehicle is stationary. Once the driver is ready to move again, simply releasing the brake pedal brings the engine back to life quickly so that it can pull away smoothly.

This engine also features direct fuel injection, which is a technology that can measure precisely the amount of fuel that goes into each cylinder at all times, which contributes to making more power out of a smaller amount of fuel and thus raise its overall efficiency.
