What to Know About the 2024 Land Rover Defender?

The 2024 Land Rover Defender is a fairly unique model that combines serious off-roading prowess with a high level of comfort and even performance, all while continuing the story of an automotive icon.

Capable of going where few can

The 2024 Land Rover Defender honors its proud name by offering a level of off-roading capabilities that can be rivaled by few vehicles other than the classic Defender it replaces. Indeed, the current model benefits from all of the latest drivetrain technologies created by Land Rover based on more than seventy-five years of experience in making off-roaders. For example, the 2024 Defender comes standard with the Terrain Response drive mode selector which allows the driver to fine-tune the powertrain settings in order to overcome any kind of obstacle, whether it be deep snow, loose sand, or even piles of rocks. Combined with the two-speed transfer case, the available adjustable air suspension and the available electronic active differentials, there are very few places the Defender can’t get to. Further adding to the impressive capabilities of the Defender is its ability to wade through water at a maximum depth of 900 millimetres and its 360-degree camera system that lets the driver see how deep the water is all around their vehicle.

Also impressive on the road

Of course, off-roading is not the primary concern for many buyers, and the 2024 Land Rover Defender has what it takes to be equally impressive on pavement as it is on dirt trails. This is thanks in part to its powerful engines which include a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder that generates 296 horsepower, a 3.0L turbocharged inline-six-cylinder mild-hybrid unit that delivers 395 horsepower, and a range-topping 5.0L V8 that offers an unprecedented 518 horsepower output. This last engine gives the Defender performance levels worthy of a sports car, with an acceleration time of only 5.2 seconds between 0 and 100 km/h in the short-wheelbase Defender 90 and a still more than adequate 5.7 seconds in the extended Defender 130.

Three sizes for a greater reach

The 2024 Land Rover Defender is capable of appealing to a wide variety of buyers since it is available in three different basic configurations that affect its length, something that cannot be said of most other premium SUVs. The heart of the Defender lineup is the 110, which features four doors, seating for up to seven, and an overall length of 4,758 millimetres. In terms of seating arrangements, the Defender 110 offers a choice between a traditional five-seat configuration, an available six-seat layout that adds a jumpseat between the driver and the front passenger, or a seven-seat configuration that adds two seats behind the second row.

Also offered is the shorter Defender 90, which has only two doors and a length of 4,323 millimetres. This model is one of the very rare two-door SUVs left on the market and it offers more practicality than its competitors by offering the same five or six-seater layouts as the Defender 110.

Finally, the Defender 130 occupies the opposite end of the lineup by being significantly larger than the Defender 110, with a length of 5,099 millimetres. This extra space is used to provide more cargo capacity, but also a wider third-row seat that results in a standard eight-passenger capacity.
