The Range Rover Sport is a Winner with Advanced Off-Road Cruise Control Technology

The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) awarded the 2023 Range Rover Sport with their 2023 Innovation Award for Best Technical Innovation. This technology, known as Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control, provides the driver with a level of control and comfort that was not previously available. Let’s take a closer look at what this technology is and how it works.

What is Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control?

Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control (AORCC) allows drivers to set the desired speed and comfort level when driving over rough surfaces. It uses All-Terrain Progress Control (ATPC) to maintain control on any kind of terrain, from snow and ice to sand dunes. Drivers can choose from four comfort levels—soft, medium, firm, or sporty—to customize their off-road experience. This allows them to focus solely on steering the vehicle across challenging terrain without having to constantly adjust the cruise control settings.

Why is this Such a Breakthrough Technology?

Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control is a breakthrough technology because it gives Land Rover drivers more control over their vehicles while providing an extra level of safety and comfort. It also makes navigating challenging terrain much easier and more enjoyable. Drivers no longer have to worry about making frequent adjustments in order to keep their vehicles under control; they can simply set the desired speed and let AORCC do all the work for them.

How Does it Work?

The system uses sensors to measure wheel slip rates in order to adjust engine torque accordingly in order to maintain traction on slippery surfaces such as mud or snow. When wheel slip exceeds pre-determined levels, ATPC will decrease engine torque until wheel slippage decreases back within acceptable parameters. It also monitors steering input from the driver so that it can make adjustments if necessary. Additionally, AORCC takes into account factors like gradient angle and yaw rate in order to provide a smoother ride than traditional cruise control systems would offer on rough surfaces where they are traditionally less effective.

The 2023 Range Rover Sport has been awarded AJAC's 2023 Innovation Award for Best Technical Innovation due to its groundbreaking Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control technology, which offers unparalleled levels of control and comfort while navigating challenging terrain. Whether you're an experienced off-roader or just getting started, this innovative new feature will make your off-roading experience safer and more enjoyable than ever before!
