Land Rover Defender or Range Rover Sport?

If you're deciding between the Defender and Range Rover Sport models when considering your next purchase, you've got a big problem. Yes, because the two models in your sights will offer you all the fun you're looking for. You're in for a treat.

However, since there are differences between the two, it's a good idea to know what you like best before you decide on one or the other. So let's take a look at some of the features that are unique to each. This will make it easier for you to choose a side.

Style

It's never easy to make a choice when two vehicles have such attractive lines. The good news is that the Defender and Range Rover Sport are very different, which should make a choice easier. In fact, you should find it easier to recognize yourself in one of the two vehicles.

If your preference is for grace and class, as well as modernity, the 2023 Range Rover Sport, with its sleek, flowing lines, will win you over every time. We're really talking about a model with classic lines.

In the case of the Defender, Land Rover has decided to play it modern, but with a retro touch. The design is less classic, but more stylized, committed. This model will go through time wonderfully and become iconic with time. For discretion, the Range Rover Sport. For assertiveness, the Defender.

Two powerful engines

Both models offer a lot of power and breathtaking performance. Only, the approach under the hood is different with the most animated powertrains of each range. Here, the question is whether you prefer naturally-aspirated engines to those with a turbo.

The Defender offers the first solution, with the addition of a supercharger. That translates into a 5.0-liter V8 that's capable of delivering 518 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque. That's enough to get you from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds (90 version, the shortest).

With the Range Rover Sport, the turbocharged V8 is 4.4 liters, but can deliver 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. That's good for a 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds.

A matter of taste, really.

The ride

Behind the wheel of both models, comfort is dominant, as is soundproofing. The sporty side belongs to the Sport model, which is more powerful and more aggressive in terms of chassis settings. With the Defender, you're more likely to be floating on a cloud. However, this model will be more at ease off the beaten path, if that's your cup of tea.

As you can see, the choice between the two models is quite a dilemma. The good news is that there are no bad choices here.

Range Rover Long Wheelbase Seven-Seat: Why Montreal's Executive Families Are Paying Attention

Most seven-seat luxury SUVs ask you to accept a trade-off. The third row gets the space, but it comes at the cost of rear-seat refinement, cargo volume, or the kind of ride quality that makes a long vehicle feel composed rather than cumbersome. The Range Rover Long Wheelbase (LWB) with seven seats was engineered to reject that compromise. It adds 200 mm to the wheelbase over the Standard... Read more
