The Main Differences Between the Land Rover Discovery and Discovery Sport

The 2022 Land Rover Discovery series reflects generations of Land Rover DNA with modern advancements that add up to a must-have, off-road capable vehicle for luxury SUV enthusiasts.

The Discovery and Discovery Sport have similarities in technology, infotainment, comfort, and style. However, we receive questions about their differences. Here, we explain them so you can make a purchasing decision that is right for your needs.

The 2022 Land Rover Discovery and Discovery Sport have a capacity difference

Both models serve a slightly different purpose, depending on your lifestyle and the number of people who share it with you. The Discovery is designed for up to seven seats as standard, whereas the Discovery Sport handles five passengers, with seating option for 7.

The increased interior volume of the Discovery also offers up to 2,391 litres of wet cargo volume (1,997 litres dry), enabling hundreds more litres of capacity than the Discovery Sport. If you have needs for an expanded interior, then the Discovery is a better choice.

Exploring powertrain differences

Both models feature plenty of power for their respective footprints. The Discovery Sport includes a turbocharged 2.0L that outputs 246 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. Standard all-wheel drive distributes power to the right places whether on- or off-road, and the famous handling, suspension, and ground clearance enable you to go more places.

The Discovery model offers two powertrain choices, the P300 (Discovery, Discovery R-Dynamic) and the P360 (available on all trims). The P300 increases horsepower to 295, which gives a boost to the larger frame and capacity. Owners who want more performance have the option to upgrade to the P360 that produces 355 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The Discovery's drivetrain also includes standard all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The price differences still reflect value

Land Rover assigns sensible pricing between both models. The more compact Discovery Sport has a base MSRP of just above $52,000. Drivers who desire similar technology, equipment, and style of the larger Discovery without the extra capacity enjoy this lower entry price point. It's also very competitive compared to other luxury SUVs in its class.

The larger Discovery features a starting MSRP of just above $70,000. Other luxury SUVs in this class are often more costly, and they don't have Land Rover DNA.
