How to Prepare Your Land Rover for a Canadian Winter: 7 Simple Steps

Cold mornings, slushy roads and short days all ask more of your vehicle. Your Land Rover is built with all-terrain capability at its core, and a little preparation before the first snowfall helps you get the most from it all season long.

This guide walks through seven easy steps, from tires and fluids to the cold-weather features built into many Land Rover models. Some take five minutes in your driveway. Others are best left to a certified service team. Each one helps you start every winter drive warm, clear and in control.

Step 1: Install a Full Set of Winter Tires

All-wheel drive sends power to the wheels that have grip, and it can only work with the grip your tires provide. Winter tires use a softer rubber and a deeper tread pattern built for snow, slush and ice. That gives your Land Rover a better hold when you pull away, brake and turn.

Fit winter tires on all four wheels so the grip stays balanced from front to rear. Plan your tire appointment early in the fall, once daytime temperatures start to stay cold. Booking ahead means your Land Rover is ready before the first storm arrives.

Step 2: Check Your Tire Pressure Every Month

Tire pressure drops as the air gets colder. Low pressure can wear tires unevenly and reduce grip on wet or icy roads.

Check the pressure once a month, before you drive, while the tires are still cold. Use the recommended figures in psi printed on the label inside the driver's door frame. A gauge costs very little and takes only a minute to use at each wheel.

Step 3: Test the Battery and Top Up Your Fluids

Cold weather is hard on batteries, and engines need more effort to start on a frosty morning. A short pre-season check catches small problems before they leave you stuck in a parking lot.

Here is what to cover before the first deep freeze:

  • Battery: have it tested and the terminals cleaned
  • Washer fluid: switch to a fluid rated for sub-zero temperatures
  • Coolant: confirm the level and the cold-weather protection
  • Wiper blades: replace any blades that streak or chatter

Step 4: Plug In the Engine Pre-Heater

Land Rover Discovery models sold in Canada list a 110V engine pre-heater in their standard equipment. Plugging it in on cold nights warms the engine before you start it. That means an easier start, faster cabin heat and less strain on the engine during those first few minutes of driving.

Not sure if your Land Rover has a pre-heater, or where the plug is located? A service advisor can show you in a few minutes.

Step 5: Get to Know Your Cold-Weather Features

Many Land Rover models offer option packs designed for cold climates. If your vehicle has them, take a moment to learn the controls before winter arrives.

The Cold Climate Pack on the Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Velar and Discovery Sport adds a heated windscreen, heated front and rear seats, and a heated steering wheel. On the Range Rover Velar, the pack also includes headlight power wash to help keep your lights clear of road salt and slush.

The Extreme Cold Climate Pack goes one step further with remote cabin pre-conditioning. You can set the cabin temperature before you leave the house, so the cabin is warm and comfortable when you get in. Range Rover Sport offers a similar feature called Remote Park Heat with Cabin Pre-Conditioning.

Range Rover Sport Autobiography equipment also includes heated washer jets and a winter wiper park position, which helps keep the blades from freezing to the glass overnight.

Step 6: Learn the Grass-Gravel-Snow Mode

Terrain Response 2 is one of the most useful winter tools in your Land Rover. It is available on Discovery, Discovery Sport, Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Velar and Range Rover. Depending on the model, each mode adjusts settings such as the engine, transmission, all-wheel drive system, suspension and stability control.

On snowy or slushy roads, select Grass-Gravel-Snow mode. It is calibrated for loose, slippery surfaces and helps the vehicle keep traction as you drive. On models with Auto mode, you can also leave the system to choose the most suitable setting for the conditions on its own.

Step 7: Pack for the Season

A small winter kit in the cargo area makes any surprise easier to handle. Keep a snow brush, ice scraper, warm blanket, booster cables, a small shovel and a phone charger on board all season.

Families who head to the slopes can look at the Snow Days accessory pack for Discovery and Discovery Sport. It includes roof cross bars for carrying skis and snowboards, a rubber loadspace mat that protects the cargo floor from snowy boots, and a snow traction system for extra grip in tough conditions. The Discovery version also adds mudflaps.
