2022 Land Rover Discovery Sport vs 2022 Audi Q5: Character has a name

For reasons we sometimes don't know, some vehicles are better known than others on the market. It could be a question of name, popularity of its creator, public interest, etc.

This is the case of the Q5 SUV from Audi. Since its debut on the market, this model has been popular with the public, which explains why it sells well. But is it because it's the best in its class? Not necessarily. In fact, when you take the time to measure it against a product like the Land Rover Discovery Sport, you realize that the Q5 falls short in many ways.

Let's take a look at what gives the Land Rover model an edge

Similarities

Before getting into the differences and what gives the Discovery Sport an advantage, let's note some similarities between the two products. The objective here is to show that, contrary to what some might think, the Land Rover representative is not behind or out of step with the Audi representative.

First, a look at the basic powertrain of both models. On both sides, we find 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinders. The power of both is really similar, both in terms of horsepower and torque. The advantage goes to Audi with 248 horsepower versus 246, 273 lb-ft of torque versus 269. We might as well not talk about it.

For cargo volume, there, Land Rover advantage; 897 and 1794 liters behind the second and first row of seats, in order. It's 759 and 1710 liters for the Q5; it's similar.

Ditto for the equipment, which can be compared from one model to the other. We're talking about two old-timers who know how to present themselves fully equipped to serve their customers.

However, the Land Rover has undeniable advantages.

THE difference

Where the Discovery Sport stands out, we take note. That's the case with the interior layout, which can be configured to seat seven, a rarity in the segment. To get a third row of seats at Audi, you have to move up in the lineup, which means additional costs.

Then there's that Land Rover style, inimitable, unique throughout the industry. You'll make a statement in a Discovery Sport. In a Q5, you'll blend in with the crowd, which is a shame when you're buying a luxury and prestige vehicle.

This is also true inside, where the Land Rover presentation is singular, distinct, yet exudes class.

And what about the off-road capabilities? If Audi's all-wheel drive is recognized as one of the best, it's matched only by Land Rover's, which also allows for much safer off-roading thanks to its increased capabilities.

Really, in every way, the Land Rover Discovery Sport is a model to discover. A model that has nothing to envy its competitors.
