2021 Range Rover Velar vs. 2021 Porsche Macan: Innovative Design, Off-Roader Capabilities

With the proliferation of crossovers throughout the automotive landscape around the world, most drivers have become accustomed to similar styles and profiles. However, the Velar places SUV styling on its end. The Velar takes an avant-garde approach that results in a vehicle so unique that it stands out among traditional designs. However, the Velar doesn't shy away from Land Rover DNA with three impressive powertrains and capabilities that make it home off-road as well.

To further illustrate the Velar, we compare it to the 2021 Porsche Macan.

The 2021 Range Rover Velar offers the right power range

The Velar lineup includes three powertrains that meet the needs of a wide variety of drivers. The Velar S includes the 250 engine, which consists of a turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 247 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. The Velar R-Dynamic S adds a turbocharged V6 that outputs 335 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. The series offers its most powerful model with the R-Dynamic HSE that features 395 horsepower.

The Velar competes closely with most of the Macan's powertrains. The Macan and Macan S trims are very similar in output to the Velar S and R-Dynamic S. The Macan GTS, the lineup's second most powerful engine, has 20 fewer horsepower than the R-Dynamic HSE. That leaves one last model--the Macan Turbo. The Turbo offers 39 more horsepower than the Velar R-Dynamic HSE, but at an MSRP that is $13,000 more. Many question the rationale for the price increase for such a modest gain in power.

The 2021 Range Rover Velar is true to its off-roader roots

When both vehicles are compared side-by-side, the differences couldn't be more obvious. The Macan has a mainstream-like appearance, whereas the Velar would look the part in a sophisticated setting or on a mountain path. The Velar is proud to be a contemporary SUV that is undoubtedly a Land Rover.

Inside, the Velar wins the volume competition. It features up to 1,731 litres of configurable cargo volume compared to 1,504 litres for the Macan. At the price level of both vehicles, versatility is a basic requirement, and the Velar has no issue displaying it. With features like Terrain Response and the advanced Pivi Pro infotainment system, the Velar offers more possibilities.
