2020 Range Rover Sport vs Porsche Cayenne: What matters to you?

Both the 2020 Range Rover Sport and the Porsche Cayenne stand out by blending impressive luxury and remarkable performance that you just don’t expect from a luxury SUV. The main difference is that the Range Rover Sport gives you a little more refinement, comfort, and luxury along with slightly better performance for a little less money.

Luxury SUV buyers considering either the 2020 Range Rover Sport or the Porsche Cayenne are less concerned by price as they are with value. And in that regard, the new Range Rover Sport delivers over its direct competitor from Germany. Let’s take a closer look.

More engine options in the 2020 Range Rover Sport

The 2020 Range Rover Sport offers a large selection of available powertrains starting with a 3.0-litre TD6. Because of the dieselgate scandal, Porsche had to discontinue the diesel powertrain option, but when done right diesel engines provide remarkable performance, great towing, and impressive efficiency. It’s no wonder the Range Rover Sport TD6 engine option is so popular. Delivering a massive 443 pound-feet of torque, it’s almost as powerful as the Porsche Cayenne S which starts at close to $100,000.

Both the 2020 Range Rover Sport and the Porsche Cayenne offer a plug-in hybrid engine option. The Range Rover Sport’s delivers 390 horsepower of combined electric and gasoline power, but more importantly it offers 51 kilometres of range compared to just 30 kilometres in the Cayenne E-Hybrid. That’s a significant difference that allows you to complete most of your daily commutes in EV power only in the Range Rover Sport. It will be harder to do so in the Porsche Cayenne.

When looking at the more powerful options, the Range Rover Sport offers a 5.0-litre V8 that is supercharged and can deliver either 510 horsepower or 567 horsepower. The Porsche Cayenne S is limited to 434 horsepower while the Range Rover Sport SVR outmatches the Cayenne Turbo by 26 horsepower.

The Range Rover Sport is also more comfortable and more spacious than the Porsche Cayenne. Both are great, but if you want power and comfort blended to perfection, check out the 2020 Range Rover Sport.

Range Rover Long Wheelbase Seven-Seat: Why Montreal's Executive Families Are Paying Attention

The third row gets the space, but it comes at the cost of rear-seat refinement, cargo volume, or the kind of ride quality that makes a long vehicle feel composed rather than cumbersome. The Range Rover Long Wheelbase (LWB) with seven seats was engineered to reject that compromise. It adds 200 mm to the wheelbase over the Standard... Read more
