2020 Land Rover Discovery vs 2020 Volvo XC90

The Discovery is a luxury SUV equipped to take you anywhere in comfort and style. Versatility and capability aren’t forgotten as it takes cues from its rugged Land Rover roots. With advanced gasoline and torque-driven turbo diesel engines, the Discovery is a presentation of what an SUV should be. To illustrate, we compare the Discovery to the 2020 Volvo XC90.

The 2020 Land Rover Discovery has simple, yet better engine options

When Discovery owners voice their preference for either a gas or diesel engine, Land Rover complies. The 3.0L six-cylinder turbocharged gas engine boasts 340 horsepower. The XC90 only offers one four-cylinder option that has different power levels, but none of them surpasses the horsepower produced by the Land Rover’s turbocharged unit.

The Discovery offers an advanced turbo diesel powerplant that produces a hill-climbing 443 lb-ft of torque. A diesel is not available with the XC90, and the only way to receive more torque than the Discovery is to purchase a hybrid that approaches $20,000 more in cost.

The Discovery also has a best-in-class towing capacity of 3,720 kg, enough to tow for many adventures. The Volvo XC90 can only tow 2,250 Kg which is considerably inferior.

The 2020 Land Rover Discovery maximizes versatility

The Discovery comes from rugged roots, where utility and performance go hand-in-hand. With up to 2,500 litres of available cargo volume behind the front seats, you can turn the Discovery into a temporary hauler of what you, your family or even what your community needs. The XC90 is limited to just 1,855 litres in the same configuration.

If you want to take your crew on a long road trip, the Discovery packs 1,166 litres of cargo volume behind the rear seats in a five-seat configuration. Don’t worry about extra bags, toys, or other surprises—the Discovery has plenty of room. However, the XC90 limits this configuration to just over 1,000 litres.

The Discovery provides more front head and shoulder room than the XC90. It also surpasses the XC90 in rear leg, head and shoulder room. With the third row added, there also is no contest between the Discovery and XC90—the Discovery provides more passenger room in all categories.

Range Rover Long Wheelbase Seven-Seat: Why Montreal's Executive Families Are Paying Attention

Most seven-seat luxury SUVs ask you to accept a trade-off. The third row gets the space, but it comes at the cost of rear-seat refinement, cargo volume, or the kind of ride quality that makes a long vehicle feel composed rather than cumbersome. The Range Rover Long Wheelbase (LWB) with seven seats was engineered to reject that compromise. It adds 200 mm to the wheelbase over the Standard... Read more
