2020 Land Rover Defender vs. 2020 Audi Q5

The all-new Defender takes a classic Land Rover look and turns it into a modern adventurer. Available in the two-door Defender 90 and four-door and Defender 110, you will find a size that is just right for yourself or your family. It features permanent 4WD, an off-road calibrated automatic transmission, a roof load of 300 kg and a towing capability of over 3,700 kg. The trim range includes the Defender, S, SE, HSE, First Edition and the top-grade Defender X.

To illustrate how this new Land Rover measures up to the competition, we compare it to the 2020 Audi Q5.

Two powerful engines enable the Defender to take on a variety of terrain all across Canada. The first is a turbocharged 2.0L engine that outputs 296 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. It is available in the 110 series models. The other is a turbocharged 3.0L light hybrid that adds 100 more horsepower and provides 406 lb-ft of hill-climbing torque. This is standard in the Defender 90 trim and is also offered in the 110 grade.

The Q5 also offers two engines, but both are behind the capabilities of their Defender counterparts. The 45-level models receive a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder that produces 248 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. The other is a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder light hybrid that generates 367 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.

The Q5 operates with AWD and not full-time 4WD. The result is a less robust system that can’t handle the types of terrain the Defender can. If you want true power distribution with a more rugged system, the Defender series is the best option.

The 2020 Land Rover Defender has advanced terrain management and other features

The Defender also features Configurable Terrain Response, which allows a more precise configuration of terrain settings. These include flooded roads, rough tracks, and more. The Defender can also wade in depths of up to 900 mm. The Audi Q5 doesn’t have advanced terrain management or high wade depths.

The Defender 110 series also has up to 2,379 litres of cargo capacity, nearly 700 litres more than the Audi Q5.
